No, not Perry Como, or Lake Como (Italy) or Como Estas, but Como, Mississippi.
Population: 1,310
And where the Hub and I spent an ab fab weekend celebrating the wedding of a dear, dear friend.
said friend w/ groom boogying to open the dancing to Chuck Berry.
I've written before about my girlfriends in Little Rock, the Logistics Sisters. You've even seen pictures, I believe. Well, we converged on Como, Miss. and took over the Como Inn on Main and seriously positively impacted the economic development of the town through food & liquor purchases. Now, it's been awhile since boys have been involved with a trip like this, and our boys took to the trip like fish to water.
Arrival in Como: Friday, April 30. Plan for the day: decorate the wedding hall. While driving to Como from Little Rock (the Hub & I began our journey on Thursday by driving to LR to stay with Logistics Sister Mel and carpool to Como), the bride called and asked for us to detour to Sardis, Miss. to find clear plastic plates. Not South Sardis, but Sardis. So, detour to Wamalart. No clear plastic plates for the reception. Failure on our first real assignment. Not good. We continued on to Como to check into the lovely Como Inn on Main, complete with Anthropologie bedding. Beautiful B&B with 6 rooms, stocked kitchen and great back porch. It's worth a stop anytime. Then, trekked two doors down to the ceremony & reception site, and hung lights, arranged tables along with other various & sundry assignments. Also brought the bride her much-needed and requested lunch from Boulevard Bread Company in Little Rock.
Marleen, Mel, Jennifer (the bride), Erin, Moi, Eva - see "crazy" bride eyes, she was starving.
Time to clean up for the "What's to Rehearse" dinner 4 door down from the Como Inn on Main. Seriousy, once we parked our car, we didn't move it again unti Sunday. After a fun evening, the MOH (Man of Honor) introduced us to a beautiful, old Asian custom ... wish lanterns. We wrote our wishes for the bride & groom on paper laterns and went outside to light them. They were like mini-hot air balloon floating down Main Street in Como. They were so beautiful in the night sky. And, we were quite pleased that the city of Como did not burn down that night due to our fun. Seriously, people. If you have a celebration coming up, check out the wish lanterns. So very, very beautiful!
Wedding Day. May 1, 2010. Happy May Day! An early morning trip to the reception hall to set up the cake table and then off to brunch with the MOH, the bride and all the rest of the girls. Wet, muggy Mississippi. We knew there was a threat of horrendous weather that could keep people from traveling, but we were there, so what else did anyone need?
The afternoon was free so we joined the three Hubs in attendance, who had been spending some quality time together for a late lunch. You know how you occasionally, but only rarely, meet people who you feel like you've known all your lives? Well, we were fortunate that one of the other gals in the wedding and her husband are those people. If you know the Hub, you know his highly inappropriate sense of humor. Well, Erin matched him gross/inappropriate/wrong joke for joke. I think they may have been separated at birth. It was an entertaining afternoon to say the least and we extended the Logistics Sisters by one to include Ms. Erin. She writes for the Product Princesses blog. And, she loved the Hub's 3 wolves shirt. It takes a special gal to understand the power of that bad boy. Good times.
Finally, time for the main event. We dressed in our finery for one of the most beautiful wedding ceremonies I've ever seen, much less been a part. How many of you know grooms who wrote song for their vow? And, had the bride's brother play guitar to accompany him, AND had the groomsmen sing the chorus (including the groom's dad.) Not a dry eye in the house. So beautiful. Good times.
Of course, maybe we should expect no less of Jimbo of Jimbo Mathus & the Tri-State Coalition. Formerly of Squirrel Nut Zipper fame. I loved his band then, but I really love his band now. The bride's brother is a member of the Tri-State Coalition, so there's the genesis of this love story. We danced, and danced. And, stole flowers from the centerpieces for our hair. And, the Hub's Lady Gaga karaoke was quite memorable. Good times.
we clean up quite nicely, even with stolen flowers in our hair.
While the 5:30A tornado sirens knocked us off our early leaving schedule, we enjoyed breakfast with everyone before heading over to the reception to help finish the clean up. Whew - if a mess is a sign of a good party, that was a good one. As we left, the bride sent us on our way with some re-purposed centerpiece flowers and a beautiful gift. We detoured a bit, since that was the week & weekend that Mississippi and Tennessee flooded.
And, p.s. If you ever need a pyrotechnician to light 100+ candles in less than 10 minutes, the Hub is your guy. Good times.
that's his "I'm lighting stuff on fire, I am a man's man." (think Old Spice commercial)
